Omungari Community Library – Uganda

Hand in Hand For Literacy was thrilled to partner with Peace Corp Volunteer, Kendra Smith of Hudson, WI, in creating a library in the rural village of Omungari, Uganda. Kendra wanted to leave a lasting legacy in this community before her 2 year volunteer service commitment ended. This legacy was in the form of a community library. With the help of local volunteers, Kendra used recycled plastic bottles filled with trash in the construction of the walls. This saved money as well as helped to clean up the community. Grant money was used to fund the construction, but there was not enough funds to cover the cost of books or shelving. HIHFL teamed up with Kendra to help complete this project. Money was sent from our organization to assist with the construction of the book shelves. Books were shipped to help fill the shelves of the library. The Omungari Community Library officially opened in July, 2014.
